Tonight's Oakland School District Board meeting will be contentious. The district administration has announced a plan to close, consolidate or reduce 15 schools. Eight schools could be closed, five could be consolidated or moved to another campus, and two K-8 schools could become K-5 schools.

According to OUSD administration, the district has too many schools compared to the number of students currently enrolled, driving up costs. and reduce the level of education.

Oakland's attendance numbers have taken a hit this year due to the pandemic, meaning OUSD's state attendance funding is at risk. OUSD's average school enrollment of 438 students is smaller than comparable districts such as Stockton, which has 679 students per school and the same size students. In the face of the budget deficit in previous years, district leaders said that closing and consolidating schools are the changes needed to restore OUSD's finances.

The school district is also under pressure to control its budget from the district and the state, which has made it clear that schools in Oakland may have to close.

Many parents, teachers and some OUSD board members strongly oppose the school closings. In a presentation last June, district leaders laid out how they would choose the next set of schools to close: by evaluating standardized test scores, reading levels, suspension rates, attendance, retention faculty, enrollment status and other metrics.

In November, the school board voted against another round of school closings and consolidations, instead of reducing other costs. But in December, board members asked Shanthi Gonzales and board president Gary Yee, the superintendent, to create a new list of schools that could be closed or consolidated at the end of this academic year.

Last Tuesday, Mike Hutchinson, the director of the OUSD school board, which opposes closing schools, made public a list of elementary, middle and high schools. Hutchinson said in a press release that he issued the list in the name of transparency so that affected school communities have more time to process and measure the changes.

On Friday, the OUSD officially notified the schools that their schools may be closed at the end of this school year.
