Washington, DC, April 27, 2022 – The Aspen Institute today announced 25 semifinalists for the Aspen Awards for Community College Excellence, adding another milestone to the award selection process. The $1 million Aspen Award recognizes community colleges that achieve outstanding, better, and fairer outcomes for students. In previous years, only ten finalists made it to the winner's path, and this change is designed to highlight the growing number of colleges across the country that are performing well.

Awarded twice a year, the Aspen Awards recognize colleges with outstanding performance in five key areas: teaching and learning, degree and degree completion, transfer and baccalaureate achievement, workforce success, and students and colleges from low-income backgrounds. Winners will be announced in the spring of 2023.
The award selection process began last October, when the Aspen Institute invited 150 community colleges to apply based on data showing strong and improving student outcomes in key areas such as retention, completion, transfer and equivalence. . Applications go to a diverse selection committee of 16 higher education experts who review extensive application data and narratives.

As a result, NCC has been honored as one of the 25 semifinalist colleges for the 2023 Aspen Prize competition.
"We're excited to see American community colleges make meaningful and measurable progress, educating people from all backgrounds and preparing them for successful careers," said Josh Weiner, executive director of the Aspen Institute's College of Excellence Program. He points to graduation rates that have increased by more than six percent for all students and five percent for students of color since 2015. "These 25 colleges represent our dream for a better country and a restored democracy."
Hartog replied, "In the previous award cycle, Aspen had not recognized the top 25 universities, so this is an exciting new step for NCC in this award process. Next, the committee will review interviews with the university leadership team and narrow the selection from 25 semifinalists to 10 finalists, which will be announced in early June 2022.
