Colleton County School District Considering Modified Calendar, Year Round School

GEORGETOWN. Georgetown County students may have more winter break, but they will start school earlier under proposed changes to the district's school calendar for the next two years.

District Human Resources Director Chalice Waits told the school board at the Jan. 18 meeting that the committee that planned the calendar had seen other school districts in South Carolina move to a modified year-round format and they were going to follow suit.

The revised year-round schedule also includes an eight-week summer break and requires students to attend classes 180 days, but the days will be more spread out throughout the year.

Outside School — Outside School

The main difference between the two schedules is that students have one week off each semester. Students typically have one week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and one week for spring break.

Students will now have one week off in October, November and April, plus the usual two weeks at Christmas in a modified year-round option.

Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, teachers will begin classes on July 26 and students will return on August 2. The last day of the semester is December 20, and the academic year will end on May 24.

This school year, teachers return on August 11, and students return on August 18. The first semester usually ends after the Christmas break in mid-January. School ends on June 3.

To transition to the new schedule,  the district plans a transition year in 2022-23 that will more closely resemble the traditional schedule, but with teachers and students returning to school earlier than before.

Next year, teachers will begin training on August 1, and students will return to classes on August 8. The last day of term is December 16, 2022, instead of this year when it ends on January 13.

"I like the idea of ​​the last semester in December," school board member Bill Gaskins said of the proposed changes. "Instead of reducing that time, it's between the time students return and the start of the second semester."

Waites said one of the committee's goals is to complete Memorial Day classes in the future.

The new proposed schedule will now go to district staff and the community for feedback, with a first reading scheduled for the Feb. 1 school board meeting.

In a 6-1 vote with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year during a meeting Tuesday night.

Berkeley Public Schools Calendar 2022 And 2023

With the changed schedule, students will have a shorter summer and two-week breaks in the fall and spring semesters. One week per semester will be a remedial week, allowing students who need academic help to receive it.

Under the revised 2023-2024 schedule, students begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Autumn vacation is scheduled for October 2-13, and October 2-6 – as a week off. The Thanksgiving break will be November 22-24. Christmas break for students runs from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring break runs from April 1 to 12, with a gap week from April 1 to 5, 2024. Last day of school is Thursday, May. . 30 in 2024.

Other breaks in the proposed schedule include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; makeup day – October 20; Martin Luther King Jr. January 15; weekend and President's Day on Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; weather makeup day on Thursday, March 28; and Good Friday on Friday, March 29, 2024.

Councilman Jason Crane was the lone vote against the schedule. During the meeting, he again expressed concern that the schedule would affect several programs, including Gateway's athletics, band and performing arts programs.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on the proposed schedule for the 2023-24 school year during its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that a shorter summer … will affect athletics, marching band and Gateway," Crain said after the meeting. "I believe the district will work, but I feel like it's just a big negative for us. I choose my conscience in this matter.'

Crain added that he supports the concept of a modified schedule that would see only two weeks off each semester.

"… I'm not too excited about the fact that it's taking us two weeks to crack it," Crane said.

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent King Lawrence said the summer of 2023 will be tough for band practice because summer camp is usually three weeks long. But there are many options for band leaders.

Georgetown County Schools Could Keep Traditional Calendar For 2022 23 School Year

Lawrence noted that the contests are scheduled by state and that there are different school schedules in South Carolina. He also suggests holding one week of band camp in the summer and using vacation time for additional band camps.

"Yes, you're used to having a three-week band camp during the summer, but how about a one-week band camp in the summer and taking advantage of the break for additional band camps," Lawrence said. "Band camp lasts two weeks in the summer and one more in the fall. I'm just saying that people will see different things and adjust.

As for the athletic schedule, Lawrence said the competition schedule is regulated by the state, so it doesn't have much of an impact. Internships should be organized, especially summer internships and their schedule.

"Football and other fall sports always have (games) during that break," Lawrence said. "It's no different than basketball having an event during Christmas break and baseball and softball having an event in the spring."

Another concern was how the two-week recovery could be implemented. Crain said he wasn't sure the two-week break served his purpose and heard from others who felt the same way.

The Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

"We can incorporate 30 minutes of intervention into every day (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty-minute intervention is a good and powerful intervention for students in a small group … If we look at a five-hour day during the intervention period, that's 10 times more than in a regular school. So, five days get 50 times more than a normal school day. This week's intervention can equal 50 days of intervention during the school year, 30 minutes at a time.

"Everything we do for these students will be geared toward helping them succeed in the future," Lawrence said. "I think we can do a lot of good this week. A few weeks ago, we got word from a school district that saw results with the intervention week."

For Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days, and he's looking into how to make those 30 days. The opportunity to speak includes 20 or 25 days in the summer and 5 days in the fall or 5 days in the fall and spring.

"After the first year, it's easier because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "No extra week
