On January 24, 2014, the Board of Regents and current President Mary Sue Coleman held a special meeting to announce that Brown University professor Mark Schlissel would succeed Coleman as the university's 14th president.

At the meeting, Schlissel said that he hopes not to lead from the "top down", but above all to listen to the students and the faculty.

"The best ideas come from people who study and learn, so I have to listen first," Schlissel said.

From 2008 to 2011, Schlissel was a professor at Brown University for three years and dean of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of California-Berkeley. With a PhD in physiological chemistry, Schlissel was a distinguished researcher and continued to publish papers during his time at Berkeley and Brown.

"(Research) was his life," Kwan Chow, one of Schlissel's first students at UC-Berkeley, told the Michigan Daily in 2014. "He ran a lab. Two years of administrative work won't erase that.

On October 26, Brown University graduate students wrote an open letter warning the University's graduate students about Schlissel's commitment to anti-jobs and anti-austerity as provost.

"We ask University of Michigan graduates to join us in reminding Mark Schlissel of the central lesson of liberal thought: academic freedom is not pure and quiet, and civil discourse is not polite and restrained," the letter said. "Not all great ideas with public value are profitable. When it comes to racism, sexism, labor exploitation, the appropriation of public resources, and the total devaluation of those who work, teach and do research in the classroom, there cannot and will not be agreement. .

Schlissel's appointment came after a more than $315,000 presidential search that lasted eight months and was filled with initial hope from students and faculty. Dentistry professor Rex Holland, who was vice chairman of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs at the time, said he was impressed with Schlissel's credentials and excited to see him lead the university.

"I am very impressed with the credentials of President-elect Schlissel," Holland said at the 2014 SACUA meeting. "I have great confidence that President-elect Schlissel will be an outstanding leader of a great institution."

Members of the 2014 student body are also happy with the student-centered approach, Schlissel pointed out in his announcement.

"(Schlissel) mentioned working with students every chance he got," CSG Vice President Bobby Dishel said at the 2014 CSG meeting. "This is something we really look forward to and should every student would be very excited."

In September 2014 – just four months into his tenure as president – a graduate student started a petition to then-athletic director David Brandon. Brandon has been criticized by students for raising student ticket prices and reducing student attendance at football games, as well as ignoring concerns about player safety. The petition – which garnered over 10,000 signatures in just over 24 hours – came amid concerns that Schlissel's Ivy League background makes him unfit to lead a Big 10 football team. Schlissel accepted Brandon's resignation on end of 31 October 2014.

Schlissel began his tenure as UM president with several initiatives, including streamlining sustainability and addressing sexual misconduct on campus.

In September, Schlissel met with members of each FSL varsity chapter to discuss alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct — two issues he said plague fraternity and sorority life. Schlissel said the overly partisan culture devalues ​​the university's reputation for academic excellence.

The Schlissel meeting was the first time that members of all FSL chapters had come together in over 170 years.

The university also introduced Wolverine Pathways — an intensive mentoring program for middle and high school students that will eventually lead to full tuition — in October. Pathways was an initiative to increase racial and socioeconomic diversity among students.

"Our work to improve diversity, equity and inclusion at the University of Michigan is a central part of our efforts to enhance our academic excellence as a public good," Schlissel said. "We cannot be great without being different, in the broadest sense of the word."

The 2016 election introduced a point of conflict on campus. After former President Donald Trump's surprise victory on Nov. 8, Schlissel wrote an email to the university community, providing resources for students seeking post-election support.

"I hope we will continue to proudly embrace the opportunities available to us as students, faculty and staff at a great public research university run by the people," Schlissel wrote. "Elections often mean big changes, but the values ​​we stand for at UM have been shaped for almost 200 years.

Protesting after Trump's victory on November 10th, Schlissel addressed the crowd and asked them to continue to stand up for what they believe in.

"Ninety percent of you rejected the kind of hatred and brokenness and longing for some ideal version of a yesterday that didn't exist that was expressed during the campaign," Schlissel said during the event. "So I encourage you, continue your advocacy and make your voice heard. They are loud and clear – this is how America is changing. That's how she always changes. This is how it will change for the better."

The comment drew criticism from conservative students on campus, who created a petition condemning the anti-Trump protests and Schlissel's comments.

"The university's response to President Trump's victory perpetuates an atmosphere of hate that shames students who voted for Donald Trump," the petition said. "As a public university president, I think his response is biased and polarizing regarding campus climate, when it should be focused instead on unifying the student body."

The Mackinac Center for Public Policy filed a lawsuit in 2017, alleging that the university failed to provide emails Schlissel sent after the 2016 election within a time period set by the state of Michigan's Freedom of Information Act.

The lawsuit, which was settled later in 2017, revealed that Schlissel was worried about Trump's victory in the days after the election and had trouble with the idea of ​​having to name an administrator to serve in the Trump administration.

In an email, Schlissel wrote that it was "ironic" that conservative students on campus felt marginalized after Trump's victory.

"Some of the complaints from our minority of Trump supporters who now feel marginalized and ostracized in our campus environment and post-election activity are ironic," he wrote on November 11.

In February 2017, Schlissel, along with 47 other university and college presidents across the country, signed a letter condemning Trump's immigration ban and asking Trump to "fix or rescind" the executive order.
