Uf Fall 2023 Academic Calendar – The UF presidential search comes amid controversy over tightening transparency laws after a Florida lawmaker introduced a bill that would exempt the appointment process from public records.

The search for UF's next president could be affected by a bill that would prohibit parts of the appointment process from being made available to the public.

He said the faculty senate and student leadership have a 21-day period to meet with potential finalists and help the board make informed decisions.

"I see no reason to put all of this behind closed doors," said Florida Rep. Evan Jenne (D).

"I think universities and colleges should have some breathing room," Jenn said. "Politicians need to stay out of universities and stop trying to impose their belief system on an academic institution."

Nearly two weeks after Fuchs announced her resignation, gubernatorial candidate and Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Nikki Fried wrote a letter to the board of trustees.

The letter reflected the concerns of faculty, students, alumni and the general public about the current issue.

"Let me say this most clearly," Fried wrote. "It is imperative that the search for the next university president be completely ethical, transparent and non-partisan, free from any political influence."

UF's ongoing academic freedom scandal drew national attention to state government influence over university administration. In October, the university denied three political science professors the opportunity to testify in a case against the state.

Because four members of the board of trustees have political ties to Gov. Ron DeSantis and donate to his campaign, the decision raised concerns about state influence over the university's decisions.

If DeSantis is re-elected, Jenne said he believes the governor will try to reshape the board of trustees in his own image, while Democratic candidates against DeSantis will seek to give the institution some powers.

Rep. Geraldine Thompson (D), who has voted against the bill each time, said she believes politics is creeping into the appointment process based on questions of academic freedom at the university.

The governor replaces board members when their terms expire, which indirectly applies the governor's influence to administrative decisions such as presidential nominations, Thompson said.

The two new board members will be appointed when Thomas Kuntz and Daniel O'Keefe complete their five-year terms in January 2023.
