Phoenix School Calendar 2023-2024 – With the support of families and GPS staff, Gilbert Public Schools will officially transition to a new academic calendar beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. The new calendar means that students and staff get two weeks off in the autumn, winter and spring holidays. The board adopted the new calendar in February 2021, and a survey found that families and GPS staff supported the change.

The school year begins eight calendar days earlier than the current school year, and the first full day of school begins on July 26, 2022. An earlier start ensures that students have more opportunities for supplemental programs and professional intervention as needed. Teachers on the school campus will continue their continuing education courses according to the previous school calendar. Although the autumn and spring holidays have been extended, care has been taken to ensure that the learning environment is not disturbed.

Phoenix School Calendar 2023-2024

Gilbert Public Schools will now operate on the same schedule as surrounding counties, including Chandler US, Higley US and Royal Creek US. GPS students and staff still have the day off until the Thanksgiving break on Wednesday, as well as the shortened spring break weekend. A break helps families prioritize and plan trips together. For families concerned about childcare needs, Gilbert Public Schools continues to offer developmental programs, youth sports and summer camps.

Hopi Elementary School / Hopi Elementary Calendar

At the primary school, preparations have been made for the beginning of the school year, when the summer temperatures can be a problem on some days of outdoor activities. If there are heat advisory days, GPS Elementary students will be kept inside and provided with board games, videos and other alternative entertainment during recess. Schools will determine appropriate activities based on student needs.

The new school calendar means athletics on the GPS Junior High campus will be pushed back four seasons, allowing each school to add boys volleyball to its roster of sports teams. Boys and girls soccer will also be expanded for seventh and eighth grades. The youth season lasts nine weeks, including the playoffs, and some changes to the schedule are expected. Accelerated player development opportunities will also be provided through Gilbert Youth Athletics. The 2022-2023 school schedule is now available online. GPS athletes and their families may contact the school's campus athletic director with questions about the impact of the calendar on minor sports. The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) will continue to govern athletics at GPS high schools.

The new calendar changes will also apply to the 2023-2024 school year. The first full day of this school year will be July 25, 2023.
