Board member Jason Crane was the lone vote against the calendar. At the meeting, he also expressed concern about how the calendar would affect many programs, including athletics, band and Gateway's performing arts program.

"I'm concerned that the short summer … will affect track and field, track and Gateway," Crane said after the meeting. "I believe the district can handle it, but I also feel it's very bad for us."

Crane added that while he supports the idea of ​​a revised calendar, only having two weeks off each semester gives him some free time.

"…I'm not sold that we need two weeks of these breaks," Crane said. "I think one week will be enough, but the board voted for what we voted for and I support that progress."

During the meeting, Aiken County Executive King Lawrence said that in 2023 summer will be tough for band practice as summer band camp lasts three weeks. However, group leaders have many options.

Laurence noted that the competition is run by the state and that South Carolina has a different school schedule. He also suggested a one-week group camp in the summer and prayer times to pray for additional group camps.

Regarding sports schedules, Laurence said that the competition schedule is set by the government, so they will not be affected much. Internships, especially summer internships and their timing, should be adjusted.

"Football and other fall sports definitely have this break," Laurence said. "It's no different when basketball has events at Christmas, baseball and softball during spring break.

Another concern raised was how the two-week treatment would work. Crane said he's not sure the two-week layoff serves its purpose, and he's heard reports from other people who feel the same way.

The Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

"We can put 30 minutes of intervention into each of our days (of the school year)," Laurence said. "Thirty minutes of intervention is a good, intensive intervention for our small group students… If we look at a five-hour workday during that intervention period, that's 10 times more than a typical school day." So in five days they get 50 times more than a normal school day. This one week of intervention can equal 50 days of intervention per school year, 30 minutes at a time.

"Everything we do for these students is designed to help them succeed next term," Laurence said. "I think we can do a lot more this week. In fact, we heard from the school district a few weeks ago that a one-week intervention is showing results."

At Gateway, Laurence said it should be 30 days and they are looking at how to make it 30 days. Options he mentioned include 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"After the first year, it's easier because you have an extra week," Laurence said. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but that extra week gives us a little more flexibility in the summer schedule."

Chairman of the school council Dr. John Bradley said he had doubts about the revised calendar, but the fact that most pollsters supported it influenced his decision to vote for it.

"I'm going to vote for it knowing that we're going to cause a lot of problems for other people," Bradley said. "I'm sorry, but again, I think we have to do what the majority of people want, without any compelling reason or reason.

January 25 at the meeting, board members agreed to move to a revised calendar concept, but did not approve the actual calendar at that time.

GEORGETOWN — Georgetown County students may see more days in the future, but they'll be starting school for the next two years under changes to the district's academic calendar.

District Human Resources Director Chelice Waites during a Jan. 18 told the school board at the meeting that the calendar planning committee had seen other South Carolina school districts move to a modified year-round format and wanted to follow suit.

The revised year-round calendar still allows for eight weeks of summer vacation, and students are still required to attend 180 days of school, but the days will be spread more widely throughout the year.

The main difference between the two calendars is that students have a week off each semester. Traditionally, students have a week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and a week for spring break.

Students will now have a week's holiday in October, November and April, and the revised year-round with the usual two-week Christmas break.

In 2023-2024, teachers start the school year on July 26, and students return on August 2. The last day of the semester will be December 20 and the school year will end on May 24.

This school year, teachers returned on August 11th and students started on August 18th. Traditionally, the first semester ends after the Christmas break in mid-January. School ends on June 3rd.

Moving to the new schedule, 2022-2023 the district is planning a bridge year that will be very similar to the regular calendar, but teachers and students will return to school earlier than before.
