We have won the National Green Ribbon School Award and have been recognized as a 'high performing' and 'high growth' school. For the last two years we have received the highest performance of the school, which is "stands out". That means we are a blue school in the SPF. This is mainly due to the ability to show high growth with different learners.

BUSD will continue to follow the K-12 COVID-19 Guidelines for Schools issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) on June 30, 2022. These guidelines require districts to manage COVID-19 in a sustainable and adaptive manner. . "We will review and respond to all updated guidelines throughout the school year. The district will continue to make COVID-19 decisions in collaboration with our City of Berkeley health partners and in accordance with City of Berkeley health orders and CDPH.

The most significant change this year is the transition to over-the-counter (OTC) testing, which BUSD called "home testing" last school year, as our primary testing method in 2022-23. It's important to note that the state does not recommend routine follow-up testing for all students and staff unless they are in a high transition period. During low-transmission periods, the state offers "one-response testing," when districts prioritize testing for people with symptoms, exposures, caseworkers, and others at risk.

Thank you for your continued patience and kindness as we work together to keep our schools safe and educate our students privately in our fourth school year affected by COVID-19. Although I know we face challenges, I hope that COVID-19 will not be the focus of our work this year. CDPH recommends that all eligible individuals receive the COVID-19 vaccine and be up-to-date on recommended boosters. People 6 months and older are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. BUSD will continue to provide COVID-19 vaccines to our school community and will work with the City of Berkeley to promote vaccine clinics.

The City of Berkeley will hold vaccine clinics for the 6 month+ age group at the clinic below. Alternatives are welcome, but we recommend using the link below. Bring family members 6 months and older eligible for Pfizer vaccine (1, 2, Booster or additional doses available). As a reminder, anyone who receives their FIRST or SECOND dose will receive a $25 gift card to the clinic below.

Berkeley High School

BUSD will continue to implement CDPH recommendations to improve indoor air quality in K-12 schools to mitigate against COVID-19.

Classroom windows will be opened when practical to increase outdoor circulation. All classrooms have a MERV 17 HEPA air purifier. In addition, filter upgrades for poor air quality index levels on existing HVAC systems were completed to include MERV 13 filtration. Air quality monitoring systems are installed in all classrooms, common areas and offices to monitor temperature, humidity, CO2 levels and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The District will ensure proper ventilation systems and maximize fresh air circulation in all classrooms and common work areas. All workplaces should use a combination of mechanical ventilation, natural ventilation and a HEPA air purifier to provide adequate air exchange, tailored to individual room characteristics.

The District shall ensure that all HVAC systems are operated in a manner that provides the highest air exchange rate per hour, including turning off demand-driven ventilation, and opening outdoor dampers as often as possible in closed and open conditions. Air filters should be MERV-13 rated where systems are accessible and changed at recommended intervals. Power equipment and/or other rooms without HVAC or natural ventilation should have low-noise HEPA air filters with a capacity and flow rate large enough for the square footage of the room.

On days of poor air quality, based on the City of Berkeley Health Department and local COVID 19 epidemiological factors, we:

Students are advised to cover up for ten days after testing positive for COVID-19 or having close contact with the outbreak.

Transition to Home Testing (OTS) This year, the state is proposing to distribute over-the-counter (OTS) antigen test kits to students and staff as the district's primary testing strategy. Antigen tests provide results in 15-30 minutes. These tests will almost always be taken by students with the help of parents/guardians. Most tests are not approved for minors
