By a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the revised calendar, students will have a shorter summer period, and two weeks in the fall and spring semesters. One week per semester will be remedial week, allowing students who need academic support to have the opportunity.

Student Calendar Released

In the revised 2023-24 calendar, students begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. The break is scheduled for October. October 2-13, October 2-6 as prayer week. Thanksgiving will be in November. 22-24. Christmas break for students will be from 20 December 2023 to 3 January 2024. Spring Break is scheduled for April 1-12, and the Week of Prayer is scheduled for April 1-5, 2024. The last day of school will be on a Thursday in May. 30, 2024.

Other holidays on the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; Weather forecast date, Friday, October. 20; Martin Luther King Jr., January 15; Friday is a holiday and President's Day. Board member Jason Crane was the lone vote against the calendar. At that meeting, he expressed concern about the calendar's impact on many programs, including athletics, the team and the Gateway Sports program.

"I'm concerned that this short summer … will affect the game, the team and Gateway," Crane said after the meeting. "I believe that the district will deal with it, but I also feel that it is very difficult for us. I voted with my conscience."

Crane added that he supports the idea of ​​a modified calendar, which would include a two-week break each semester that takes a break.

"…I'm not really sold on the fact that we need two weeks off," Crane said. "I think a week would have been enough, but the board voted for what we voted for, and I'll support it. It's moving forward."

At the meeting, Aiken County Supervisor King Lawrence said it would be difficult to get things done in the summer of 2023 because summer camp is usually three weeks long. But there are many options for team leaders.

Lawrence said the competition is organized by the state and there are different schools in South Carolina. He also suggested holding a week-long music camp during the summer and using prayer times at additional group camps.

The Aiken County Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2022-23 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

"Yeah, you're used to camping for three weeks in the summer, but what about going to camp for a week in the summer and taking advantage of the extra opportunity to worship at camp," Lawrence said. "One two-week camp in the summer and one in the fall. I'm just saying people have to look at things differently and adapt."

Regarding the schedule of the games, Lawrence said that the schedule of the games is determined by the government, so they will not be affected much. Traditions, especially summer traditions and times, must change.

"Football and other fall sports will be (sports) at halftime," Lawrence said. "Basketball is no different than having baseball and softball events on Christmas break and spring break."

Another concern was how the two-week recovery would work. Crane said he's not sure the two-week break will do what he wants, and he's heard from other people who feel the same way.

"We manage to build 30 minutes of activity into our days (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty-minute intervention is a very large and powerful intervention for our students in small groups… If we do a five-hour workday in that time, that's ten times more than what they get in a school day. So that's 50 times a school day in five days." they get a lot. That's the equivalent of 30 minutes of intervention for 50 days of the school year in one week of intervention."

"Everything we can do for these students is designed to help them succeed next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think we can do a lot this week. We heard from another school district a few weeks ago that saw results using a one-week intervention."

As for Gato, Lawrence said he has to stay for 30 days and is looking for how to spend those 30 days. Possibilities he mentioned include 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"Next year, things will be easier because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but an extra week gives you flexibility in how you plan for the summer."

The president of the school board Dr. John Bradley said he was skeptical of the revised calendar, but that many respondents supported it supported his decision to vote for approval.

"I'm voting knowing that we're causing a lot of trouble for some people," Bradley said. "I'm sorry for that. But then I feel that we have to do what many want without us.
